Soft landing back in New Orleans and on IG- here’s a random smattering of photos from Oklahoma life part I. This will be an interesting year, living in two states. I really enjoy not being tethered to IG, and I also really miss the interaction; the internet has always been a push-pull for me. These days more pushing than pulling. I never did find that short-eared owl, but managed to put three sparrows on the life list!🥰

It’s been a rough February my friends, but Imbol

It’s been a rough February my friends, but Imbolc has just passed and I’ll be making my way to Oklahoma at the week’s end. I’m going to take the month of March off of IG to spend some time in some of the last tallgrass prairie left on earth to look for this guy, and hunt down some greater prairie chickens- hopefully a prairie falcon too!! I’ll be on Osage nation land, and thankful for it❤️

If anyone is in Osage county and knows the birding hotspots, please DM me!!!

The progenitor of all birds.
When I learned of archaeopteryx as a child, it immediately grabbed my attention. I was fascinated- a dinosaur with feathers! Of course this impressionist version is after a vintage Golden dinosaur book illustration and also reminds me of a phoenix. Which is fitting as well, as it is the animal representing the highest incarnation of Scorpio!

I want to thank everyone who participated in our challenge, it’s been such a blessing to see so many talented artists coming together around birds!

Day 27: Ruby-crowned kinglet
Well, I was cursing whoever put yarn on the list (it was me) and then also cursing whoever decided to actually use it (again, me). Why did this seem so easy when we were little?

These are our winter sweeties, and New Orleans is chock full of them! I have only seen the crown once! Of course they don’t breed here so that’s no surprise. But it’s also a great way to ID golden-crowned kinglets at a distance because they always wear their stripes!

Also, look! They are named after a star and a flower ⭐️🌼

Day 26: Hoopoe
I scratched this out with an oblique pen I bought the other day and some Higgins black ink. I didn’t look at a photograph and it took about 1.5 minutes to draw. It’s tiny! About 1 3/4” tall and 2” long. I’m pretty chuffed I actually could release all my normal perfectionism and just literally whip this out!🤩

This is technically a northern shrike, but they exhibit the same Vlad the Impaler style as their cousins and I couldn’t resist adding some garish color to this vintage illustration!

We have needed a new clothespin bag for like 5 years, but we were making do and I never thought about it except for the rare occasions when I hang laundry out. I was doing that today and decided today was the day. So I looked online and didn’t like any of the options and realized I was going to have to make my own. So I did. I started making notes about what I liked about our old one, made some adjustments and realized I needed to actually play with fabric because I could not visualize it on paper. My first prototype went in to the trash because wow, I was still not seeing it. Second time was better, but if you’ll swipe, you’ll see that I forgot to leave a hole to turn it right side out. Luckily that was an easy fix. Once I had that done, I started in with my real fabric and I was so proud that I had sewed the hardware and loop in so carefully, reinforcing them several times and then….laughing til I cried because I had sewn it on the wrong side. Luckily that was also an easy fix and voila. A lined bag with a front slit opening. It has the clasps for hanging on the line and a loop for hanging on the hook in the closet. I also boxed the corners because I figured out how to do that last weekend. And now I need a nap. Except I have laundry to fold.

I have never done chalk lettering, so I don’t know what details would make it more realistic (and I intend to poke around for examples to get ideas), but I know I would absolutely smudge the nearly finished work, so I totally used the finger smudger on some of the leaves. The sentiment is applicable to so many different things I don’t even know more to start. #wtaf #procreate #suzannesdigitalart #chalklettering

Keep going — cornflower and saffron for #coloricombo. I watched @everytuesday’s tutorial earlier in the week and when I started working with these colors last night decided to play with what I remembered from her video. If you swipe and watch the video replay, you’ll notice that the lettering was originally going to be blue, but what you see in the final is the color burn paper texture layer that’s over top of everything (well, except the circle itself). At one point I turned the lettering layer off and really liked the way this looked, so I went with it! The moment when I switched to the darker background is when I finally decided I liked this one!#procreate #suzannesdigitalart #keepgoing #everytuesdaytutorial

I would like to introduce you to my new plant baby

I would like to introduce you to my new plant baby. We have decided we’d like to see if we can keep houseplants alive. This one said it was a good starter plant and it is not toxic for the four-legged monsters who live here. Sally has gotten sprayed with the water bottle twice, Hobbes hasn’t gotten anywhere near it. LOOK AT THOSE LEAVES. The label just calls it a calathea, but I just looked it up online and it is actually a Calathea Peacock plant. And the site I’m on makes it sound sound a little more finicky than the label lead is to believe, but we will do our best to keep it alive and healthy.
